Wisconsin State Fair Park Executive Director Randy Prasse announced today that he will step down from his post next month.
Prasse's departure comes following reports of a rift among members of the State Fair Park Board, members of which pushed for Prasse's removal in closed session last week.
In a statement released Tuesday, the board thanked Prasse for his service to the Fair.
"The board wishes him well in his future endeavors," the statement said. "The board will continue to develop a strategic plan and take steps to continue to move the Fair Park in a new direction. "
Crane, in a further statement, said the board plans to convene in February to begin discussions regarding the process of replacing Prasse.
"The board will look for a candidate that has the executive skill set necessary to take the Park to the next level while continuing to provide an affordable family friendly event," Crane said.
Under Prasse's leadership, the Fair saw major upgrades to its entertainment lineup and an increase in sponsorships, including a naming-rights deal with U.S. Cellular. That agreement helped the fair generate a $1.3 million profit for the fiscal year ending in 2007.
In his own statement, Prasse did not acknowledge issues with the board and said he would officially step down from his position on January 5, 2009.
"I am proud to have played a key role in the many accomplishments of the Fair Park leadership and staff since 2004. Our efforts have returned accountability, profitability and, above all, credibility to the Fair Park. Through leadership and hard work, we have strengthened the 'Crown Jewel of Wisconsin events' and made it more accessible to an increasingly diverse audience, while maintaining it as a safe, clean, affordable and family-friendly entertainment venue for all."
His passion for State Fair was helped in part by his rural upbringing. Born and raised on a seventh-generation dairy farm in Freeport, Illinois, Prasse was an active member of 4-H and FFA. He also showed cattle at the county and state levels, telling OnMilwaukee.com that he prided himself on his showmanship performances.
Prior to joining the Wisconsin State Fair in December 2004, Prasse spent four years as Executive Director of Milwaukee's East Town Association, managing events like Bastille Days, Jazz in the Park and Gallery Night. He's also helped organize Racine's Harbor Fest and worked with the Racine County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Obviously, there's more to this story than you are sharing. Usually, an individual's full name (and position) is given when someone is mentioned in a story for the first time. Who is this Crane? If she is the new chairman who has tossed out a competent executive director than shouldn't we be told that? Does she have serious concerns about the previous management? Does she have a different vision for the future of State Fair Park? Was a controversial paragraph edited out? Why no byline? Simply passing on quotes from statements and news releases isn't jounalism. Will there be a followup?

I'm very disappointed that the State Fair board forced someone out who finally turned a great event into a profit-making venture that would help ensure it's around for generations to come. This wreaks of bad politics; friends helping friends. As soon as a new head of the fair board takes control, she starts pushing out a successful director and then one of the other members of the board is speculated to want the job? I'm disappointed in the State Fair board and the process.
