There's something about the sight of leaves changing colors and school supplies in stores that make some people – whether they are students or not – crave shoes in early autumn.

According to Howard Silberman, owner of Ma Jolie / Footgear, fall foot fashion is all about comfort and style. Many mid-heel shoes will be popular for women, along with wingtips in interesting color combinations.

"People, particularly women, want comfort, but not dull-looking," he says. "Nothing too flat this fall. These shoes offer a little height but don't sacrifice comfort."

Silberman says boots will remain in fashion this fall – from short to mid-calf to knee high – along with Western-style.

"Not overly Western," he says. "More reminiscent of Western styles."

Popular men's shoes for fall will be creative recreational and sneakers, according to Silberman. Kate Blake, owner of Shoo, says retro-inspired "Mad Men" style shoes will be widely available for men this fall, too.

TOMS brand shoes is currently running a promotion that for every pair of shoes purchased, the company will donate a new pair of shoes to a child in need.

"For both men and women TOMS are extremely popular and available in many colors and patterns. They are comfortable and also support a great mission," says Blake.
