During last night's fall finale of "Gotham," Warner Bros. fittingly released a quick new teaser of next year's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." The clip is not even a minute long, but it seems like been a while since we've seen any new footage of next spring's big comic book tag-team blockbuster.
Not bad! But, in classic DC movie form, this teaser reveal feels once again like it's playing catch-up to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
There's always DC's constant scurrying to gather the Justice League in the shadow of Marvel's already prosperous MCU. But just for "Batman v Superman" alone, DC lost out to "Captain America: Civil War" when the two had a chicken fight over its May 6 release date, and the former blinked, moving earlier to March 25. Now, its little teaser spot gets a little buzz while the "Captain America: Civil War" trailer unveiled last week played to intense raves and wide excitement.
Maybe it's not a fair comparison; the "Civil War" trailer was our first look while we've already gotten some "BvS" trailers. Still, at this moment, "Batman v Superman" sure feels like the other fighting superheroes movie.
As for the clip itself ... it's OK! The glum and gritty angle DC's working with doesn't do much for me – "Man of Steel" pummeled me with its Dark Serious Angst, and inviting the king of angst Batman to the party doesn't seem to have lightened things up a bit – but Snyder is a great visual stylist, and this is an effective, tense mini-clip. Superman's cultish desert military is intriguingly eerie, and hey; Superman knows who Batman is now. That seems like a big deal. Plus, Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill glower well, which is good because "BvS" appears to be three hours of that with a few 30-minute punching intermissions.
The biggest concern right now – even more so than angst overload – is just how much Snyder's superhero smash-up has to pack in. It has to reintroduce a new Batman and why he's fighting Supes (plus apparently revisit Bruce Wayne's parents' death, because 12 times isn't enough for it to really sink in). There's Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and the rest of the justice buddies, which will probably just be cameos for the most part but still. There's Lux Luther (Jesse Eisenberg) and apparently Zod again.
And oh yeah, there's Superman, who audiences aren't completely convinced they actually like after his rebooted introduction. Snyder and company sure don't seem to like him, as these spots all play like they side with poor billionaire Batman against the imposing god that is the Man of Steel.
With "The Avengers" movies, we already have skin in the game when our heroes team up together – or fight. We've already established them, gotten to know them and care before they have to cram into a single movie. With "BvS," we've barely met these folks.
But I guess we'll get to know them well enough when the movie actually comes out in March. Any bets on who wins – between Batman and Superman, OR Marvel and DC?
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
