This morning, the Milwaukee Film Festival announced its lineup for the 2015 Cream City Cinema program, which highlights the talents of locally-based filmmakers – and awards one with a $5,000 cash prize. 

This year's collection of picks includes three documentaries, two feature-length fiction films and four shorts programs – including the debut of the "The Milwaukee Music Video Show." The selections include:

"30 Seconds Away: Breaking the Cycle"

Marquette graduate and former federal prosecutor Faith Kohler takes a look into the many complicated sides – from the police to the justice system to those living on the streets – and few easy solutions to Milwaukee's homelessness problem in the documentary "30 Seconds Away: Breaking the Cycle."

"Clarence"

Kristin Catalano's inspirational documentary follows Clarence Garrett, an African-American WWII veteran whose strives to finally earn the final 52 credits for his bachelor's degree at UWM – despite being 85 years old and coping with complications from an earlier cancer threat. 

"The Milwaukee Music Video Show"

A collection of short films showcasing not only Milwaukee's impressive young filmmakers, but also the city's growing and thriving music scene. The videos include:

The second of the Milwaukee Film Festival's annual short film showcase of the Cream City's cinematic skills, ranging from documentary to claymation. This year's selections includes:

"The Milwaukee Youth Show"

A showcase of the young filmmaking talent here in Milwaukee, ranging in age and style – from documentary to fiction to music video to PSA to fiction to animation and more. This year's picks include:

  • "Crazy He Calls Me"

  • "Fusion"

"Neptune"

A coming of age story, "Neptune" follows a young orphan in 1980s Maine who becomes obsessed with a young boy's disappearance at sea – so obsessed that she takes his former place on a lobster boat alongside his grieving father. 

"Take the Dog"

Andrew Tolstedt and Carol Brandt co-direct this road trip tale of three Milwaukee punkers – and their dog – heading out to California for a family wedding. Drinking, feuding and self-reflection ensues.   

"Yoopera!"

As the title might hint, the documentary "Yoopera!" tells the story of a group of people hoping to combine the worlds of opera and the Upper Peninsula in perfect harmony.
