A new modern/alt rock fest is coming to the Summerfest grounds.

Summerfest announces new modern rock festival

Milwaukee World Festival, Inc. officials today announced plans for a new alternative and modern rock music festival that will take place Friday, June 4 and Saturday, June 5, at Henry Maier Festival Park.

Advance purchase single-day passes are $25, advanced two-day passes are $40, and day-of admission tickets are $35 per day. Capacity at the event will be limited.

The new two-day fest, which will occupy the same weekend formerly held by RiverSplash!, will be named through a public contest.

The management of Milwaukee's Summerfest will plan, promote and produce the new music festival that will feature three stages of alternative and modern rock bands, including national and regional headliners, action sports competitions, marketplace shopping and interactive exhibits.

"The first weekend in June will provide music fans with nationally and internationally known alternative and modern rock bands. It will be a fun weekend and a great way to kick-off summer," said Don Smiley, President and Chief Executive Officer of Milwaukee World Festival, Inc.

The naming contest begins today at yourmusicfest.com. Submissions should include a logo treatment and will be accepted online through February 21.

Milwaukee World Festival, Inc. officials determining the top three finalists' submissions. Then, beginning March 1, the public will have one week to review the finalists' submissions and vote to determine the name and logo of the new festival.

The naming contest winner, preliminary music lineup and other details will be announced on March 10, 2010, along with the new festival's official Web site.

The naming contest winner, accoring to a news release, will receive a VIP experience at the festival, including roundtrip airfare for two (originating in the Continental U.S.), hotel accommodations in Milwaukee, tickets to the festival, an assigned parking space, VIP hospitality access, backstage passes, meet & greets, signed merchandise from the bands, and a themed profile on Summerfest.com and the new festival's Web site.

Tickets for the festival go on sale at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 10 at www.yourmusicfest.com with no incremental fees and on Ticketmaster via phone at (800) 745-3000, online at www.ticketmaster.com, and at Ticketmaster outlets.

Summerfest booking has always been about timing in regards to the bands' tour itineraries. As they're starting the momentum early enough with this festival way before the summer touring, there may be a chance of seeing some great bands. However, if it does read like a 102 playlist it could be a lukewarm event.

I hope this teeny-tiny "festival" works! It would be nice to have a festival that features current artists; not the same old Summerfest lineup re-hashed.

A wee bit pricey unless they get some "great" acts. They should all start listening to "Afternoon At The Cafe" for some ideas. Also 88.9 radio has a great mix.

Supposedly they are supposed to have some decent local bands..we shall see (Love Monkeys does not count). 1021 is the major sponsor, but I heard 88.9 mention it already..I assume some of the modern acts will be current radio staples - maybe Phoenix, Spoon, Chevelle, etc. I doubt you will see any real trendy hip indie acts like Coachella and other fests of those size have. And for the record I liked Summerfest2 during Labor Day!!
