According to test, everyone I know is an alcoholic
Every now and then, I like to go back and re-read old articles on OnMilwaukee.com, since many are just so timeless and as good as they were when originally published. Usually, I check out a section's "top clicks" list to point me in the right direction, and today I took another look at Molly Edler's 2008 article entitled, "Are you an alcoholic?"
I had forgotten what a good article this was, since we've all heard that question asked about so many people so many times, right?
I found this part, near the bottom, however, the most interesting:
The following test is used by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore to decide if a person is an alcoholic.
1. Do you lose time from work due to drinking?
2. Does drinking make your home life unhappy?
3. Do you drink because you are shy with other people?
4. Does drinking affect your reputation?
5. Have you ever felt remorse after drinking?
6. Did you get in financial difficulties due to drinking?
7. Do you turn to lower companions in an inferior environment when drinking?
8. Does drinking make you careless of your family's welfare?
9. Has your ambition decreased since drinking?
10. Do you crave a drink at a definite time daily?
11. Do you want to drink the next morning?
12. Does drinking cause you to have difficulty sleeping?
13. Has your efficiency decreased since drinking?
14. Is drinking jeopardizing your job or business?
15. Do you drink to escape worries or troubles?
16. Do you drink alone?
17. Have you ever "blacked out" from drinking?
18. Has your physician ever treated you for drinking?
19. Do you drink to build up self-confidence?
20. Have you ever been in a treatment facility or hospitalized for drinking?
The administrators at Johns Hopkins say anyone who answers "yes" to three or more of these questions is an alcoholic.
Well, if this test is accurate, then I should notify the fine folks at Hopkins that pretty much everyone I know in Milwaukee under 50 (and some over 50) are alcoholics.
Granted, if people answer "yes" to enough of these questions, then yes, they certainly have a problem. But show me someone who hasn't come in late to work from a hangover, someone who hasn't shot off their mouth while blotto or someone who has made a crappy bar with annoying customers a little more palatable with a cocktail or three.
I'm no expert, but it seems to me that the question "Has your physician ever treated you for drinking?" shouldn't get the same weight as " Does drinking cause you to have difficulty sleeping?" Perhaps the author has never had a little too much red wine or skunky beer at barbeque or got cajoled into doing a shot of Jaeger at bar time.
I guess, in general, I'm just not a big fan of using self-help tests to diagnose a serious condition. Playing "20 questions" on a disease that requires more knowledge of context and back story seems a little too "high school" for my liking (and no, I'm not bitching because I answered yes to too many questions).
If I were to make a test about whether someone is or isn't an alcoholic, it suppose it would be just three questions, and answering all three with a "yes" only means that more analysis is necessary:
- Do you need to drink to have a good time? (It's OK to admit that some things are more fun while drinking.)
- Can you do activities sober that are normally associated with drinking? (It's OK to admit that "being able" to and enjoying them are two different things.)
- Is drinking messing up your life? (Only you and your loved ones can define "messing up.")
But what are your thoughts, Talkbackers? Are we just too tolerant of binge drinking here in Wisconsin? Or does everyone just need to order a martini and chillax?

I recall the first time I read this 'list' and I thought the exact same thing. I do see that some others don't agree....but I guess they have never hung out with my friends at a Brewer's Tailgate and if they did they probably wouldn't enjoy it. Their loss.

#4. Does drinking affect your reputation? Yes, it makes me way more awesome.

There are some of us that can honestly answer no to all of those questions. Because we refused to participate in the drinking game as teenagers we tolerated the criticism then as we did while in the military, on the job, and with some friends during our lifetime. Now we're 60, never had alchohol problems with our children, with our spouse, or even had the tendency to turn to alchohol during the rough times. There are so many more exhilarating things to do in life and resting in bed the next morning enjoying the memories sure beats a hangover.

My 1997 premonition
Published May 21, 2013
Preparing to hang three photos I took in 1997, I noticed something amazing about the second photo that I had never noticed before: the building in the center of the frame is CityCenter. The viewfinder is looking right at our new office suite. When I shot that photo, I had no idea what that building was. It just looked cool.
TV loyalty
Published May 17, 2013
I watched the series finale of "The Office" last night, but before I did, I had to blow through the previous five episodes gathering dust on my DVR. In the end, it was worth the night of marathon television, but when I think about the entire final season of "30 Rock," also unwatched on my DVR, I wonder when I'll get around to it.
Downtown's "secret" clothing shop sells high-end fashion at rock-bottom prices
Published May 15, 2013
Hidden in plain sight is a clothing store you have to see to believe. Frieschskys, 788 N. Jefferson St., isn't actually that special to look at. But when you step out of the elevator on the seventh floor of the nondescript office building, it doesn't take long to realize that something special does await you.
The nicest Brewers of all-time
Published May 13, 2013
Plenty is written about baseball's jerks. I've even met some of them. But rarely do people talk about how nice some players are. They may not have been the best players, but if personality counts (which it doesn't), they'd be in the Hall of Fame.
Milwaukee Talks: WISN-12 anchor and reporter Shelby Croft
Published May 9, 2013
Shelby Croft was following the playbook for most television reporters. She jumped from market to market, position to position, ultimately serving as a main anchor in Salt Lake. But Croft knew there was something more in life than market size. She moved to Milwaukee to get closer to home. She got married, had a daughter ... then got divorced. A single mom with a high-profile job, Croft's story is an interesting one.
Thoughts on the sudden death of a friend
Published May 3, 2013
Last night at about 3 a.m., I woke up to go to the bathroom. I used my phone to light my way, so as soon as my eyes adjusted, I noticed that my mom had sent me a death notice. My friend and neurosurgeon, Dr. Spencer Block - the guy who did my back surgery in 2011 - had died yesterday at age 51.
Why boo your own guys?
Published May 3, 2013
The Brewers should've won the game Wednesday, but John Axford blew a two-run lead in the eighth inning. Sitting close to the field, it was the first time I'd seen and heard the vitriol from fans around me. They booed him. A lot.
Are you Milwaukee's next rock star?
Published April 29, 2013
It's pretty thrilling to get on stage in front of a live band, facing a cheering audience, putting your personal spin on beloved cover tunes. The idea that you could win $1,000, studio recording time and a gig at Red Rock Saloon is practically gravy, right? The Red Rockstar II competition runs for four weeks in May, kicking off this Wednesday.
Perfection: The 2013 Jaguar XJ
Published April 24, 2013
If I was a less verbose writer, I could sum up the 2013 Jaguar XJ in one word: perfection. But that wouldn't make for much of a review, and after a month with the XJ that Fields Jaguar in Waukesha loaned me, I have so much more to say. I'll start with this: if you're the kind of person who can afford to spend $73,000 on a car, and you require something with four seats, this is the car you should buy. Run, don't walk, to Fields Jaguar and buy it. Now.
You can help cure cancer
Published April 24, 2013
This spring, the American Cancer Society is kicking off a massive project to sign up, track and study 300,000 adults for decades, in hopes of curing various types of cancer. It's not the first time the society has undertaken this. Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) follows CPS-1 and CPS-2, and the results of the first two programs served to advance cancer knowledge and treatment by leaps and bounds. The Milwaukee goal for CPS-3 is 2,000 people.
