Next year – on Sept. 8, to be precise – "Star Trek" will celebrate its 50th anniversary, and from the sounds of it, it is not wasting the occasion.
We already knew that a new movie, "Star Trek Beyond," was coming out next summer, with Justin Lin ("Fast & Furious 6") taking over for J.J. Abrams at the helm – and star and Trekkie Simon Pegg co-writing the screenplay! – but today, a report from StarTrek.com announced the anniversary will also bring about a brand new TV series, the first since "Enterprise" went off the air in 2005.
Considering the news just broke today and show won't hit air until January 2017, details are unsurprisingly slim. There is no cast or even a vague plot synopsis in place, other than that the show will be separate from the current rebooted film franchise. There is one name already attached: executive producer Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote the 2009 "Star Trek" reboot (yay!) and the 2013 sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness" (eh ... ).
The most interesting part of the announcement comes with where you'll be able to find the new show. According to the report, the show will air on CBS ... CBS All Access, that is, the channel's $5.99 digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service. The show will premiere with a "special preview broadcast" on CBS before heading exclusively to streaming.
I know; I had no idea CBS had a streaming service either, which is why this is pretty genius if you're CBS. Suddenly, people care about your once-anonymous service – and are probably planning on forking over the $5.99 to watch "Star Trek" episodes both new and old. As for the fans, there's sure to be some griping over having to pay for the show and not being able to see it on regular TV, but still, it's a new TV show for the first time in over a decade, and it only makes sense for a show that explored strange new worlds to explore the strange new world of original streaming content as well.
Plus, it can't be worse than "Nemesis."
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
