More than 18,000 people will gather on the Milwaukee Lakefront Sunday morning with the goal of raising $1.2 million to support the Komen Fund and breast cancer treatment and research. Their day of mourning, celebration, support and courage is made possible by the roughly 1,000 volunteers who spend about 10 months of the year devoted to the event and the cause.

Even on chilly weekends in November, runners have at least a half-dozen 5K races to choose from. Only one of them emphasizes cooperation over competition, and gives all its young participants bib No. 1. The Girls on the Run of Greater Milwaukee, an expanding youth development effort, hosts its first outdoor 5K Turkey Trot on Sunday, Nov. 18, in Greenfield Park.

For years, one of my Dad's friends has raved about a Storm the Bastille T-shirt design from the late 1980s that he simply refers to it as the "suspender T-shirt." Until last night, I hadn't seen it. Now that I have, I want it.

The Becky Werner Foundation will observe World Meningitis Day this Saturday with a 5K run/walk April 21 at the lakefront campus of Concordia University Wisconsin.
