Writer-director Aaron Posner wrote a sleek and elegant stage adaptation of the 1967 novel "The Chosen" with the book's author, Chaim Potok, and In Tandem Theatre is giving the play a pitch-perfect production. The writing is taut and dramatic, the direction is smart and the acting is exceptional.

When Mark Clements came to Milwaukee to be artistic director of the Rep, he brought musicals, a charming British accent and Aaron Posner. A writer and director, Posner was responsible for the Rep's stunning production of "My Name is Asher Lev" in the Stiemke Theater in the fall of 2010. It was the high point of Clements' impressive inaugural season. Now Posner is back at the Rep to direct "To Kill a Mockingbird."

For all of its many charms and inducements, the American Players Theatre has spectacularly succeeded at one essential thing. The company, now in its 32nd season, has made Shakespeare clear, compelling and accessible for two generations of theatergoers. It is interesting to note that the same qualities that serve Shakespeare so well are also enhancing our appreciation of two very different 20th century classics here this summer.

Art should reflect life or comment on it. Theater's ability to reflect life in profoundly meaningful ways is brilliantly demonstrated in two extremely different productions that began performances here last weekend.
