Why do we live here?

Published March 25, 2013

That's not a rhetorical question. There are many, many, many reasons why I love Milwaukee, and why I started OnMilwaukee.com in 1998. But it's the end of March, and the temperature is hovering around freezing. I'm seriously wondering why we live here.

Last March = 1, this March = 0

Published March 18, 2013

I have long held the belief that many Wisconsinites have unrealistic expectations for the month of March. Emerging from the dreary days of February, turning the clocks forward, and seeing the phrase "First Day of Spring" on the March calendar lead many to believe that sunny days with highs in the 60s should immediately commence. Indeed that is not true. March is very much a winter month in Wisconsin.

Social Circle: How do you cure the winter blues & blahs?

Published March 3, 2013

It's that time of year in Wisconsin when winter starts to drag on and on. People start feeling cooped up, impatient for spring and more annoyed with snowfall or cold weather than they were a month or two ago. So what's a person to do?

Winter passes half-way mark

Published Jan. 23, 2013

The bitter cold of the last few days was apropos when considering historical average temperatures across southern Wisconsin. Feel free to consider winter halfway over.

Where, oh where, has our winter gone?

Published Jan. 17, 2013

Our winter is a part of our identity. It's part of what we sell to people to come to Wisconsin. It's how we try to make people think that sub-zero wind chill is a joyous event that we can all celebrate with a romp in a snowbank followed by hot chocolate or spiced rum and a roaring fire. But where, oh where, has our winter gone?

Dreaming of snow

Published Aug. 31, 2012

Last night, I had two weird dreams. The first involved a baby bear attacking me in rural Canada. That was pretty scary. The second was of a blizzard in Milwaukee. That wasn't scary, but it was pretty disappointing. After all, it's 90 degrees and humid right now, but in just two months, we'll start to see winter creeping again. That's the blink of an eye.

What should we do about winter?

Published Aug. 20, 2012

You can hardly go a night without some kind of entertainment or recreation or dining beckoning you to step outside and participate. Milwaukee gets summer. Now, what can we do about winter?

Coldenoughforyou_storyflow

Is it cold enough for you?

Published Jan. 30, 2012

Absolutely not. Not by a long shot. In fact, except for a brief stretch earlier in the month where my car's thermometer told me it was 2 degrees outside, the cold weather this winter has barely bothered me at all. Even then, I managed to get through that snap pretty easily.

Are snow blowers worth the money?

Published Jan. 22, 2012

So I decided I would buy a snow blower. And so I went to a few stores that sell snow blower. And I froze with sticker shock.
