For months, all the pro leagues had been preparing for this announcement from some athlete. They had formed alliances with LGBT groups, laying plans for how to respond and how to handle the inevitable public reaction. But even in Wisconsin, we have moved beyond this kind of homophobic bull crap.

Jason Collins, currently an NBA free agent, came out publicly to Sports Illustrated on Monday to become the first active male athlete to do so in one of the four major American sports leagues. His colleagues with the Milwaukee Bucks expressed their support of his decision and don't see it as an issue going forward in the NBA.

The major American pro sports leagues are getting ready for its first active, male athletes to come out. And when this happens there's going to be a lot of shouting about progress and how far we have come, but that's a little overwrought. Real progress will be when a gay professional athlete is only concerned about his performance on the field and the rest of us cheer or boo for the way he plays.

On Feb. 6, the Milwaukee Wave and Sue Black made history when she was named the team's President and CEO. In all of the male professional sports organizations in America, Black became the first openly gay woman to hold a chief executive position.
