His new book, "Once in a Great City," explores a confluence of factors that intersected to create a unique moment in the history of the Motor City. In the past few years, Detroit has started to come around again and many new businesses, mostly bars and restaurants, are opening all over the city. The addition of three casinos has helped the city attract more visitors. Both gritty and pretty, Detroit can be, for the right travelers, a fascinating, fun-filled vacation destination.
