Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" is more than four centuries old and has been performed in every conceivable place, in every conceivable way. But in all of those performances, no matter what was done to "juice up the story," it has always remained Juliet's play. I can't count the number of times I've seen this play, but I have never seen a Juliet like the one in the James DeVita directed production that opened Saturday night at American Players Theatre.

When you hear about a retirement home, the vision comes easily. But not in the eccentric, many times brilliant and always interesting mind of Dale Gutzman, artistic director of Off The Wall Theatre. Gutzman's vision of a retirement home comes to life in "Romeo and Juliet," which opened Thursday night and runs through April 6. And to say this version of the Shakespeare classic love story is unusual is a massive understatement.

There's not much doubt about the athletics involved in being Juliet, the most famous lovestruck young woman in history. The story of her and her Romeo have kindled sparks for generations. Now ballerina Nicole Teague will bring Juliet to life when "Romeo & Juliet" opens the season for the Milwaukee Ballet, running from Oct. 31 through Nov. 3.
