For many, the best way to learn about a beverage is to taste different types side by side. Flights are an excellent way to take note of the differences - whether it be the profile of the fruit, the tannins, the sweetness, texture or acid - between various wines, beers or spirits.

It's always a pleasure to sample a restaurant's new menu. I find it's a bit like getting inside a chef's mind for a moment - and peering around at the ingenuity and imagination that lies there. I had the opportunity to do just that as I joined part of the crew of OnMilwaukee.com for a retreat luncheon at the Rumpus Room last week.

"Great beer deserves great food" is the slogan of the Rumpus Room, the new Bartolotta Restaurant Group venture that opens tonight in the Water Street space previously occupied by Eagan's. The second half of that statement has described Bartolotta eateries since the first opened in 1993. But the restaurants brothers Joe and Paul Bartolotta own are known for their wine lists and cocktails. Beer has not been in the spotlight - until now.
