Ideas for a better Riversplash!
It's time for Riversplash! to change and embrace the river.

What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Published June 2, 2008 at 10:30 a.m.

Another Riversplash! has come and gone, and before local mainstream media (many who don't spend a great deal of time in Downtown Milwaukee, much less live there) drastically overblow Saturday's incidents (a closing time "mob scene" and gun shot to someone's foot), I'd like to provide a residential and neighborhood (yes, Downtown is a neighborhood) perspective on the festival and -- similar to last year -- provide ideas on how to make it better.

For the record, OnMilwaukee.com hosts Riversplash.com, updates the Web site with supplied information and has been a festival sponsor for years.

As I said last year, I wholeheartedly think its time to shake Riversplash! up and continue to clean it up.

At its heart, Riversplash! is a beer festival. It helps provide Water Street bars with needed revenue as they head into a Summer that's usually slower. I have no problem with this. But, the Water Street and Old World 3rd Street areas during the three-day festival (at least after dark) have become mini-Bourbon Street-like parties.

Without massive security and organized settings, things can and did get crazy. Drunk people do drunk things. Stuff happens, I know and I've been there, trust me. But, I believe Riversplash! can do more to make its Water Street and Old World 3rd Street areas cleaner, less crowded and safer. See ideas below.

Even though Riversplash! is a beer festival, it still positions itself as family-friendly. Truth be told, it is. Especially on Sunday and during the days on Friday and Saturday. But, frankly, it's much nicer to walk through Downtown when Riversplash! isn't going on. It's cleaner and void of the mishmash of vendors and seemingly uncoordinated design and look of official festival signs, vendors and maps.

Riversplash! should be about the Milwaukee River. This year, to the organizing groups' (Riverwalk District, Water Street Association and Old World 3rd Street Association) credit canoe rides, fountains (why can't they remain all summer?) and other water-related activities were offered and heavily promoted. If you were on a boat cruising through Riversplash!, it looked great and the weather was nearly perfect.

In the spirit of constant change, creativity and improvement I offer the below three simple suggestions for Riversplash! 2009 (the 20th version of the festival). Please use the talkback feature to agree, disagree, comment and provide ideas of your own.

Kill the music, or most of it.
Milwaukee simply doesn't need another music festival. And Riversplash! is far from being a great one. I was thrilled to see Willy Porter back this year and with all apologies to the booked bands, let's move Riversplash! away from music and focus it on the dining, controlled drinking and the river. Strolling musicians, buskers and smaller music stage areas would suffice.

Figure out what you want to be, be it and design it.
Design matters in everything and Riversplash! lacks a look and feel. As I walked through on Friday I was shocked at the clutter, non-uniform signage of the vendors and the general cheesiness (for lack of a better word) of it all. I'm sure I'll get ripped on for this, but compare Riversplash! and its look to that of Bastille Days. There's no comparison. Bastille is, for the most part, clean, friendly and organized. Riversplash!, not so much. Simply hiring a design firm and stealing a few ideas from Bastille would help greatly. Also, let's de-clutter Pere Marquette Park -- too many vendors there spoiled the setting.

Embrace the Milwaukee River, the fireworks and how about a parade?
This is a holdover from last year, but one idea that needs to be better embraced. For a festival called Riversplash!, it really doesn't "use" the Milwaukee River enough. The festival needs more fountains, gondolas, public floating art, lights and a night lights parade along the Riverwalk and on the Milwaukee River. Let's add games that use the water, too -- like rubber duck races and other contests (and yes, I know they do an annual paddle boat race). Use the river, have fun with it and do the same with the Riverwalk. As for the fireworks, they are awesome. But, let's couple with a summer Downtown lights program (like the Marcus Center) and a parade of boats and lights on the Milwaukee River.

I love Milwaukee's Downtown and expect its festivals and events to be great. For Riversplash! to continue, without additional and similar problems next year, it needs to change.

Another parade in Milwaukee? Oh, please. No more parades. As for moving away from the music, I disagree. Music and Milwaukee are a fine pair. How about just some additional security, intersection checkpoints, and more responsible service from the bars.

@leprechaunshawn I think the reason no one has brought up race is because A. In this case race is completely irrelevant, what difference does it make what color the thugs were, white, black or brown, shooting in a crowd is stupid no matter who does it. B. Im not sure it is clear what race the thugs were to most people who didn't see them. Young black thugs usually don't act out at these type of events, they usually save their ruckus for largely black events like June teenth or Afro fest. Young blacks also are not commonly seen at these events holding bottles of beer to toss at police, that is more of a white thug past time. Finally, the only footage we have seen of the incident shows young white males being arrested. The fact that the media has been very quiet on the identity of those arrested also leads me to believe they may have been white. For what ever reason, perhaps parental involvement, the media is less likely to plaster their faces and names all over TV if young white kids are the assailants in these incidents.

Music or no music, one thing rings through loud and clear. Milwaukee is a city where "drinking" is a destination. Bands and music are incidentals. Cover bands are relegated to being living jukeboxes that play music to complement the drinking. People could care less if it is live. And it is perpetuated by the mentality that the level of a band's greatness is directly proportionate to how many kegs they sell. Riversplash should be on the river and not just a reason to block off Water Street to booze for three days. Find a cool music niche that would encourage listening. Perhaps some of the area's great original music talent only - bands that deserve a shot at performing before a large audience and won't yell "SOCIABLE" every third song.

I was at Riversplash--on both sides of the river--from about 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and I didn't see any of the "ugliness" or out of control drunkenness that everyone else claims to have witnessed. I just saw a lot of people having a good time. That's probably what most everyone else saw. But then the news media--especially television--glommed on to the incident (It was still the lead story on Channel 4 on Tuesday morning for crying out loud) and it suddenly became the "in" thing this week for everyone to relate their personal stories about how much their Riversplash experience sucked. Mine didn't.

I'm a many year veteran of Milwaukee summers and its various festivals. I have to say that Riversplash took a while to catch on and the weather hasn't always helped. But for as long and hard as organizers, bar owners, businesses, and the City of Milwaukee have worked to make this the real kick off to summer in the city, it is amazing how quickly the wrong element can destroy it for everyone. I was on 3rd street when it got dark and things turned ugly. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I won't be back to Riversplash. I've stopped attending Summerfest at night. You'll never see me at Juneteenth Day. I just don't feel obligated at all to have to tolerate that element of our city...and I won't. This event will either end Riversplash or surely destroy its goal to attract families and folks to downtown with the promise that it's safe, clean, reasonably free of nuisances and perhaps even a cool neighborhood in which to live. Just like African World Festival...all it takes is a gunshot and the game is over. For the idiots who claim that this element must be accepted and tolerated, or even invited to where civilized people gather, I say "shove it." I have no stomach for pretending the problem isn't the problem.
