Home means many different things to different people. However, it all comes down to living in a space that reflects you and your personality. Sometimes that vision can be difficult to create on your own. That’s why Steinhafels started its Decorating Solutions Interior Design program several years ago.

The program is focused on affordability and customization. It’s all about fitting you and your needs – whether you’re just looking for a couple simple accessories to spruce up a room, or you want to do an overhaul of your entire home. There are several different packages available, so you can pick the one that fits your needs and budget.

Steinhafels’ designers are teaming up with OnMilwaukee to bring you a monthly Sponsored Content segment called "Ask the Designer." It’s your chance to get interior design advice from experts who design people’s dream homes for a living!

This month’s question comes from Caroline in Wauwatosa. Caroline asks, "How can a person create the appearance of more space in a room?"

Designer Aaron Keller is tackling this one. Aaron works out of our Menomonee Falls store.  Aaron knows that decorating can be overwhelming at times. He wants to make the process fun and easy, and help clients express themselves in their homes. He has decorated hundreds of spaces – ranging from traditional to transitional, to contemporary and rustic.

Here are Aaron’s five easy tips for making a room appear larger.

1. Get out the tape measure, and choose furniture that is the correct scale for the room.

A big mistake people make is buying furniture that is too large for the space.

2. Dark is out!

Use light paint colors on your walls. In open concept spaces, use the same color or color family; fewer visual breaks make the space feel larger. Also: No accent walls!

3. Use a light colored area rug to help open up the space.

4. Mirror mirror on the wall!

Mirrors help reflect light and give the illusion of more space.

5. Use elements that draw your eyes upward.

Take advantage of height in the room. Tall floor lamps, twigs, ladders and artwork all create the illusion of more height – just to name a few examples!
