Today, the Milwaukee Brewers announced that Darnell Coles, who spent the 2014 season as the assistant hitting coach for the Detroit Tigers, will be the Brewers' new hitting coach. Coles replaces former hitting coach Johnny Narron, who was fired on Oct. 10.

Coles' hiring marks his second stint with the Milwaukee Brewers. He served as the team's minor league hitting coordinator in 2010-11 and as the manager of the Double-A Huntsville Stars in 2012-13. Last year, he was tapped to coach the Triple-A Nashville Sounds, but was hired away by the Tigers.

"Darnell has an impressive Major League background as a player and coach," said Brewers general manager and president of baseball operations Doug Melvin. "With his knowledge of hitting and strength as an instructor, he has the ability to connect with our players, with whom he is quite familiar."

The former infielder/outfielder has had an extensive career in baseball, including playing 14 seasons with the Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds, Toronto Blue Jays, St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies throughout the '80s and '90s. He left with a .245 batting average, 75 home runs and 368 RBIs in 957 total games, as well as a World Series ring as a member of the 1993 champion Blue Jays. He's also most notable for having two games with three home runs in each, once with the Pirates and again with Blue Jays.

After his playing days, Coles began coaching in 2000 as minor league hitting coordinator for the Seattle Mariners. He then spent several years as an analyst for ESPN before returning to coach in 2006, working as minor league roving hitting instructor for the Washington Nationals. He then served as manager of the Class-A Vermont Lake Monsters and Hagerstown Suns before working as hitting coach for the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs.
