{image1}The new Bar Lulu (2261 S. Howell Ave.) opened quietly last week, right next door to its sister business: a funky noshery called Café Lulu.

"We're working out a few kinks before we make a big splash," says Cameryne Roberts, who owns both Lulus with Sarah Jonas.

But bar Manager Paul Kennedy started splashing around behind the bar a while ago, and created a fun drink menu of assorted, non-grocery store wines, micro beers and imports. He is now focusing on concocting specialty cocktails.

"We're finding our feet right now," says Roberts. "We're seeing what people want in the way of cocktails and going from there. Paul already has some great ideas."

Café Lulu food is also available on the bar side, and the kitchen is staying open an hour later, until 10 p.m., to accommodate patrons' late-night cravings for Lulu's awesome homemade potato chips and other tasty plates.

Bar Lulu's décor is a blanket of warm colors and interesting items. The bar top, created by Will Nourse, is made from recycled doors, and the lights are fused glass pieces by local artist Michelle Andre.

"And, we have the coolest bathrooms in town," says Roberts.

It's true: both washrooms have super high ceilings and amazing tile work. The women's room features a green and yellow glass tile countertop and the men's has caramel-colored counter tiles and a striking red tile floor.

Roberts and Jonas opened Café Lulu in April 2001 and bought the building later that year. They had planned to expand, and when their tenant decided to retire, they moved toward opening a bar.

"We are so glad to have found this space in Bay View," says Roberts. "We both live here and we knew the neighborhood was dying for something other than Mexican or pub food."

At this point, they have no plans for live music, but may host it in the future. Again, they're waiting to see what their customers' want.

"People love giving their opinions," laughs Roberts.

As for the name, there isn't any special significance to the name "Lulu," rather it's a moniker both Jones and Roberts could agree on.

The two women have been friends for 10 years and, according to Roberts, are very good business partners as well. Plus, Jonas has a long history of working in bars, including Mader's.

"Oh sure, we've fired each other a few times -- and fired ourselves as well -- but we mostly see eye-to-eye. Look, she's making faces at me right now," says Roberts.
