Welcome to Saturday Scorecard. Consider this the kickoff of the pre-game show for the Brewers' home opener, the Wave's championship game, the NCAA championship game, the Masters and the opening of dozens of local softball, kickball and soccer leagues.

Let's get busy...

"Yo" is ready to go: Brewers right-hander Yovani Gallardo is excited, but not particularly nervous about his first opening day assignment.

"It's just one of those things that I think every starting pitcher would like to accomplish at some point during their career," he said.

"It means a lot to me (especially) for the fact that two years ago, I missed the whole year (with knee injuries). To be able to get this proves how much confidence they have in me and makes me push harder and work harder."

Gallardo, a 24-year-old right-hander, pitched the first game of the 2008 Division Series in Philadelphia but has never started an opener during his pro career. He could have had the honor last season, but was coming off knee surgery so manager Ken Macha decided to hold him back in order to avoid adding extra pressure.

"I don't look at it as pressure; I look at it as kind of a privilege," Gallardo said Saturday. "It's a privilege to me. It's very important to me."

Pressure? That's for the other guys. From the moment he first stepped on the mound for the Brewers, Gallardo has presented a calm, relaxed demeanor.

"I always try to be the same -- loose and relaxed," he said. "I'm not that kind of guy where I sit in my locker and don't talk to anybody.

"When you see me on Monday, I'll walk in there just the same, walking around, joking around. When it starts getting close to game time, you've got to prepare."

Who is right? Macha isn't certain who is going to start the opener in right field. Corey Hart struggled for much of the spring, but had good at-bats Saturday and is expected to be the primary starter. Veteran Jim Edmonds is a good matchup against Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez, but has been bothered by soreness in his hamstring. Jody Gerut didn't have a particularly great spring, but could be an option.

"It's still up in the air as far as I'm concerned," Macha said.

Injury update: Catcher Gregg Zaun is battling tightness in his quadriceps... Right-hander Jeff Suppan, on the disabled list with a stiff neck, will pitch a simulated game Sunday in Phoenix and travel to Milwaukee for opening day... Chris Capuano will stay in extended spring training before joining Class A Brevard County in a couple weeks.

Dear fear? The Bucks have suffered some agonizingly close losses of late and with seven games to go the playoff picture is pretty jumbled.

The loss to Charlotte didn't help.

If the Bucks are to stay in front of the Bobcats and win the sixth slot in the playoffs, they'll likely need to win three of the seven games (Charlotte would have to go 5-2).

The Bucks play Phoenix (tonight at the Bradley Center), then play at Chicago on Tuesday, against New Jersey Wednesday at home and finish with Philadelphia (road), Boston (home), Atlanta (home) and Boston (road).

Buckle your seat belts and watch the scoreboard. This is going to get interesting.

  • Why does everyone seem to hate Duke? Because they win? Because of that lacrosse scandal? I mean, Christian Laettner played how many years ago? If you hate Duke for their success, how do you feel about Michigan State?
  • The Brewers remodeled their clubhouse with new carpet, fresh paint and a couple new flat screens and couches. The makeover was prompted in part by a flood and also by the fact that the previous look was about 10 years old. So far, the players seem to like it a lot.
  • In a couple weeks, we're going to be paying attention to the Indianapolis 500 and people will ask -- didn't they used to race in Milwaukee the following week?
  • Former Marquette star Lazar Hayward scored 23 points to lead all scorers in the Reese's College Senior All-Star Game Friday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Could Hayward follow Wes Matthews' lead and be a productive NBA player? He drained five three-pointers in the game. The question is whether he can defend on the perimeter.
  • Speaking of the Golden Eagles, incoming recruit Jamail Jones was featured on ESPN Saturday playing for his team, Montverde Academy. They tell me that Jones' Twitter handle is @mellow6.
  • What is Twitter, by the way?
  • The Admirals need to pick up the pace in order to secure their playoff berth. The point they picked up against Peoria, reducing their magic number to six. The game Tuesday afternoon against the Rivermen, a rare home matinee during spring break, will be huge.
  • Is it a coincidence that Tiger Woods is playing in the Masters and two Hooters restaurants near Augusta National are having bikini contests?
  • In the Brewers' exhibition finale against Detroit on Saturday, the four umpires converged to discuss whether Carlos Gomez's bunt was fare or foul. Yep, looks like the men in blue are in mid-season form.
