The list of departures from Netflix for the month of July is quite the bloodletting, but credit where credit is due: Their newly announced list of arrivals appears to at least try to stop the bleeding and infuse some new plasma into the streaming service's veins.
Now, if you're looking forward to seeing anything resembling a new release from the past year or so, welp, there's always the August announcement. The only notable new movie is "Mary Poppins Returns," a movie you likely just remembered. (Sorry, Emily Blunt!) Otherwise, the standouts here are all Netflix Originals – as will be the case from here on out, I imagine – and older favorites.
But luckily, all of those are fairly strong categories in this announcement. The Big Red Streaming Monolith is clearly getting itself, and its viewers, primed for Martin Scorsese's new mobster flick "The Irishman" by snagging some of the director's earliest classics, "Mean Streets" and "Taxi Driver." There are a few other retro hits and past awards season favorites too, including "Caddyshack," "Philadelphia," "Rain Man" and "Road House." And while they're not quite new releases, recent blockbusters like "Inglourious Basterds," "The Hangover" and "Cloverfield" should help distract you from the increasingly evaporating selection of Hollywood releases on your Netflix menu screen.
But the major additions in July are all the Netflix Originals, highlighted by the final season of "Orange Is the New Black," new seasons of "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" and "Queer Eye," and the latest chapter in a little series called "Stranger Things." May have heard of it. Pretty big.
