The Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board's "A Traveler's Guide to America's Dairyland" is a user-friendly guide to the creamy goodness of our state.

Let Wisconsin's dairy map lead you to a fun and cheesy day out

Have a cow, man. Why not? After all, it's Dairy Month here at OnMilwaukee.com. Join us all month long as we explore all things that make you go "Moo" and celebrate America's Dairyland during the Dairy Days of Summer! Brought to you by OnMilwaukee.com and the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board.

Wisconsin is America's Dairyland and from thumb (Door County) to pinky (Gransburg), there are cheese makers, creameries and cheese shops across the state.

Of course, the Internet is your friend in searching for places you can visit to buy fresh cheese and to see it made right before you eyes. But even more user-friendly is the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board's "A Traveler's Guide to America's Dairyland."

The illustrated map includes more than 100 creameries, cheese makers and cheese mongers from Kenosha to Colby, Beloit to Eagle River and all points between.

Use the map to find Beechwood Cheese, in Beechwood, where we made cheese; or to Henning's in Kiel, where they make mega-wheels of cheddar.

And use it on Saturday, June 23, to wend your way to Sassy Cow Creamery in Columbus, northwest of Madison, to celebrate "A Day in the Life on the Dairy," a free on-farm experience to celebrate Dairy Month in Wisconsin.

"It's a family fun day at our dairy and farmstead creamery celebrating how Wisconsin's $26.5 billion dairy industry enriches the lives of all consumers and brings a full-circle connection to the source of their dairy products — the cows," says James Baerwolf, who owns the 500-dairy-cow-farm with his brother Robert.

The event runs from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and features a range of activities, including:

  • Farm tour and hayride
  • Creamery tours
  • Meet the family farm's newest baby calf.
  • Sample new Sassy Cow Creamery low fat chocolate milk and dairy products
  • Taste award-winning Wisconsin cheeses, including, Cesar's Cheese, hand stretched mozzarella cheese crafted in Wisconsin the authentic Mexican way; Crave Brothers farmstead cheeses.
  • Nordic Creamery artisan hand-crafted flavored butters including cinnamon-sugar, maple syrup and garlic and basil, all made in the Coulee region of western Wisconsin.
  • Sample local dairy products from Sugar Brook, Sugar River Dairy and Noble View Dairy.
  • Kids contests including a coloring contest and pedal tractors.
  • Taste Country Kettle Corn's kettle corn and deep fried cheese curds.

Sassy Cow Creamery is at W4192 Bristol Rd., in Columbus.
