Bright and early this morning, the president of the Academy Cheryl Boone-Isaacs and Chris Hemsworth announced the nominees for the 86th Oscars. Unfortunately, Hemsworth did not do the announcement as Thor, but that was just one of many expected disappointments, along with the usual snubs and surprises, the early conference unveiled.

"American Hustle" and "Gravity" led the way with 10 nominations each, including Best Picture. Alongside those two for the big prize are "Captain Phillips," "Her," "Nebraska," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Philomena," "12 Years a Slave" and "The Wolf of Wall Street."

For those who enjoy fun Wisconsin connections, "12 Years a Slave" screenwriter John Ridley was born in Milwaukee and grew up in Mequon, while the writer, star and subject of the documentary "Dirty Wars" Jeremy Scahill is also a Milwaukee native.

So place your bets and watch some movies before the ceremony hits March 2. Most of these movies are really, really good ... and then there's "The Lone Ranger."

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.

When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
