Milwaukeee's "fashion district," otherwise known as the Historic Third Ward neighborhood, has landed its first national women's retailer. Anthropologie will open on the corner of Broadway and Chicago at 301 N. Broadway this winter.

"The Milwaukee location in the Third Ward is scheduled for January of 2008," said Amy Arflin, a representative for Anthropologie. The building, owned by Robert Joseph, will feature under ground parking and is currently being completely renovated.

Across the street from shoo and steps from the neighborhood's first boutique, Lela, this is the first Anthropologie location in Wisconsin (Anthropologie has six Chicagoland locations).

The company's Web site explains the concept like this: "Anthropologie was founded in 1992 by a small group of people with a love for making things that inspire the imagination. To our delight, over the past decade we have traveled the globe, broken new ground with our catalog and web design, and most significantly of all, found customers who are our soul mates on this wondrous journey."

This high-end casual clothing and other merchandise retailer is run by Urban Outfitters, Inc. who also is opening a Urban Outfitters location on Milwaukee's East Side.

The store does little to no advertising, but has a loyal following In a 2002 Fast Company story said this, "One of our core philosophies," explains Anthropologie president Glen Senk, "is that we spend the money that other companies spend on marketing to create a store experience that exceeds people's expectations. We don't spend money on messages -- we invest in execution."

Urban Outfitters, Inc. announced, in May, that it will soon launch a lifestyle brand and now has 110 Urban Outfitters stores in the United States, Canada, and Europe; the Urban Outfitters Web site and catalog; 95 Anthropologie stores in the United States; an Anthropologie Web site and catalog; and Free People, the Company's wholesale segment, which sells its product to approximately 1,500 specialty stores, department stores and catalogs, as well as through 8 Free People stores, its Web site and catalog.
