So, if you create a list of must-haves in the world of bacon, then AJ Bombers is probably on the list. Well it is definitely on the list of the producers of "The United States of Bacon" on the Destination America channel.
Restaurant owner and chef Todd Fisher gets to travel the country for The Discovery Channel’s newest offering to check off bacon dishes on his bucket list. Because the three-part "United States of Food" did so well in the ratings, Fisher got to expand his broadcasting acumen with a full season.
The 12-episode run kicked off on Sunday night, and featured four stops in the area, including the peanut butter bacon cheeseburger – the Barrie Burger – at AJ Bombers. You can see my earlier report about the filming of the episode here.
"When the crew was here before (in 2010), they remembered the Barrie Burger when they were filming," AJ Bombers owner Joe Sorge said in October. "They were looking for places that feature bacon in a unique way. And they remembered the peanut butter burger."
The cheeseburger features bacon and peanut butter, and was inspired by patron Katie Barrie.
The crew from Sharp Entertainment, which produces the show for Destination America, also filmed at the Saloon on Calhoun, which features a daily happy hour of bacon with its bacon-wrapped pork wings made from tenderloin. Fisher also got into the kitchen at Frank's Diner in Kenosha for the Garbage Platter – eggs, hash browns, veggies, five different cheeses, and five kinds of meat. And the crew went to the Comet Café in Milwaukee for its bacon-wrapped meatloaf.
If you missed it on Sunday night, the show will re-air at noon on Tuesday. You can see a small clip from the episode here.
ROSE BOWL PARADE: As Badgers fans gear up for the Rose Bowl tomorrow in Pasadena, Calif., many of us at home in front of the TV set can enjoy the Tournament of Roses Parade. This New Year’s Day tradition of first-class marching bands and floats made from plant materials is often a must-see for many families.
If you are a fan of "Lake Effect" on Milwaukee Public Radio on WUWM-FM 89.7, then you’ve heard from essayist Jerianne Hayslett. Once, she had the opportunity to drive a float in the parade. You can here about her experience here.
COUNTDOWN: It wouldn’t be a New Year’s Eve without mention of Dick Clark, who took pleasure in counting down the final moments of each year since 1972. Clark, who passed away in April, suffered a stroke but continued to work in front of the camera for his annual TV special. Ryan Seacrest, who joined Clark on the broadcasts in 2005, takes over as the main host for the ABC airing that still features Clark’s name.
Jenny McCarthy and Fergie join in the efforts introducing musical acts throughout the evening as the clock is counted through multiple time zones.
Carson Daily, current host of "The Voice," will have his own countdown show on NBC tonight. "New Year's Eve With Carson Daly" will also broadcast from New York’s Times Square.
Media is bombarding us everywhere.
Instead of sheltering his brain from the onslaught, Steve embraces the news stories, entertainment, billboards, blogs, talk shows and everything in between.
The former writer, editor and producer in TV, radio, Web and newspapers, will be talking about what media does in our community and how it shapes who we are and what we do.
