ArtWorks for Milwaukee, an organization dedicated to developing Milwaukee's future workforce, is hosting a family-friendly Safe Place Block Party on Aug. 27 from noon until 4 p.m. at 706 South 5th St.

Fourteen Milwaukee teens, currently employed as Intern Artists at ArtWorks for Milwaukee, will perform spoken word poetry about crime and violence that plagues Milwaukee, and what youth can do about it. Mosaic glass pieces, created by ArtWorks interns, which portray positive stories about their communities will also be on display.

In addition to showcasing  art work from their interns, ArtWorks for Milwaukee is collaborating with organizations in the Walker’s Point neighborhood including Walker’s Point Center for the Arts, Arts@Large, The National Café and Glamorosa Salon & Spa for the block party.

Free art activities, free face painting, free hair braiding, one-of-a-kind art sales, food/beverages sales from Fast Foodie, Mangia! Mangia! and Michael’s Real Italian Ice, as well as a raffle will all be available for attendees of the ArtWorks block party.

ArtWorks for Milwaukee is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching skills needed for employ-ability to teens who need the training most.  This summer, ArtWorks for Milwaukee interns have completed two different projects; "Mosaic Window to Your Community" with Lead Artist Nicole Lesser and "Safe and Sound Spoken Word" with Lead Artist Dan Vaughn. The interns are using the block party as the unveiling event for their work, as well as a youth-led intervention again crime and violence.
