Having occupied the controls at "Rock & Roll Roots" for 24 years, you can well imagine I have amassed my share of music trivia questions.
Well...in anticipation of the Packers biggest game of the year this Sunday, let me pose this question: What do Da Bears and divorce have in common?
Back in 1977 Dave Mason (former member of a great band Traffic and member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame) released the hit single "We Just Disagree." A beautiful song about no fault divorce. It's one of those "even if you don't know the artists you know the song" songs.
"So let's leave it alone because we can't see eye to eye. There ain't no good guy, there ain't no bad guy. There's only you and me and we just disagree.e"
Great song! A little while before Dave had the big hit with it, the actual writer of the song released it on his own solo album. That writer is none other than the late Jim Krueger from Manitowoc. In fact, Jim plays on the Dave Mason version of the hit and spent about 20 years recording and touring with Mason. In 1988 Jim, also known as Bruiser, tired of the West Coast music scene and came back to our lovely state. Still undoubtedly proficient with his 12-string guitar, his creative talents overflowed into starting a little band in which the accordion took a little more prominence than his prior assignment. Jim Krueger was "Otto" in The Happy Schnapps Combo.
While the sentiment is ageless, and recently the Lambeau Field crowd has used it as a chant, the words "The Bears Still Suck" were both put to music and sung by none other than Jim Krueger!!! Go ahead, check the credits. The same Jim Krueger that wrote "We Just Disagree" created the song "The Bears Still Suck."
"If you drive to Soldier Field they make you pay a toll For cripes sake they only won one lousy Super Bowl They make fun of Wisconsin, but we don't get upset Where do you think that they're all headed every chance they get
We don't really hold a grudge 'cause this is all in fun As far as football rivalries we're both number one Still we wouldn't mind seeing Ditka run over by a truck 'Cause the Bears...Still...Suck
The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck They really really really really really really suck Yes the Bears...Still...Suck "
So if you, like me, are driving up to Green Bay on Sunday ... as you pass Manitowoc, think about the TWO great songs written by the late Jim Krueger. And if you like, feel free to use the trivia question to win an extra drink on New Years Eve. Happy New Year and Go Pack.
Two responses came back, including one janitor position. Steve took the other: the opportunity to hang out at WUWM.
After that, he worked at WAUK, then WQFM, then WZUU, then back to WQFM ... and finally worked afternoons at WKLH for a little while.
"I gave up Eddie Money to earn money in 1986," says Steve, who eventually entered the world of commercial real estate.
"But 23 years ago WKLH offered me the chance to wake up early every Sunday morning," he says. "I mean every Sunday morning. I mean like 5:30 am. I mean no matter what I did on Saturday night. Live every Sunday morning. I love it."
