The Milwaukee Business Journal first reported this story in its Dec. 28 print edition, but developer Tyler Hawley added this via e-mail, about his company's development at 153 N. Milwaukee St., "In light of the Business Journal article that came out today, I would like to clear a few things up. We are not demolishing the current structure. We are renovating the building and adding on a portion to the corner."

Indeed, Hawley Strigenz Development Corporation is redeveloping the former Beck Carton Corp. building at 153 N. Milwaukee St. into a mixed-use development located at the corners of Milwaukee and Menomonee Streets in the Third Ward. So, more retail, restaurants and office tenants are on the way to the growing neighborhood.

The project consists of 14,500 sq. ft. of office and 21,000 sq. ft. of retail space. The project is designed and will be built by LaMacchia Group, and leased by Siegel Gallagher. All of the office space is leased, and the project has a letter of intent for a large portion of the retail space.

Siegel Gallgher is working with several other retailers for the remaining space. One source says that a national restaurant is looking at the site, but Hawkins would not comment.

"Seeing as it is one of few buildings in the Third Ward with adjacent parking we continue to have numerous contacts about the remaining retail. As for names of tenants, I am unable to comment at this time," he said via e-mail.

The project has secured its financing, and construction is scheduled to begin in February, with building completion by the end of 2008. Estimated cost of the project is $9 million.
