For the first time in its existence, Sugar Maple, 441 E. Lincoln Ave., took our readers' pick for best bar in Bay View, narrowly beating out the Horny Hideaway.

And Sugar Maple is serious about beer. With 60 American craft beers on tap, a back room for music and a relaxed, lounge-y feel up front next to its long, slinky bar, Bruno Johnson's sophomore effort is a stylistic nightlife upgrade to the neighborhood (this spot once housed a Sikh temple).

Prices are higher than most bars in Milwaukee, but remember, this is much better beer than you'll find at your corner tap. Get there, early, however, and you'll be rewarded: Sugar Maple does $1 off all drafts, Monday through Friday from 4-8 p.m.

As much as we do enjoy Sugar Maple, our editors chose Palomino as our pick this year. Tater tots just go so well with PBR.
