For the seventh straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com, presented by the restaurants of Potawatomi. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2013."
Last year, Joe and Angie Sorge’s then-new Smoke Shack burst onto the dining scene and unseated Speed Queen as your favorite barbecue joint in Milwaukee. Despite its small size, Smoke Shack has a big taste and one that was quick to win over Milwaukee diners.
This year, Smoke Shack, 332 N. Milwaukee St., has solidified its hold on your smoky imagination, topping Speed Queen by five percent of the vote.
Enter this "shack" through a sliding barn door and enjoy community-style dining and a down-home atmosphere, with an outdoor patio for summer dining, too.
The menu features dry-rubbed and humanely-raised meats, a wide variety of sauces at each table, homemade cornbread and a killer bourbon selection. The owners say that they often sell out of favorite items, so if you're craving your Smoke Shack fix, you might want to get there early.
Meanwhile, the legendary Speed Queen BBQ on 12th and Walnut Streets came in second place.
