For the eighth straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com, presented by Locavore, the newest restaurant at Potawatomi Hotel & Casino. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2014."

Benji’s Deli turned 50 in 2013, and OnMilwaukee.com readers decided to start the restaurant’s second half-century of business off right by naming it the best breakfast/brunch spot in the city.

The small restaurant at 4156 N. Oakland Ave. in Shorewood is famous for its lunches – especially the corned beef – but its all-day breakfast menu captured the hearts of all this year, edging out three-time defending champion Blue's Egg by a couple hundred votes.

Everything about Benji’s breakfast fare is down-home, from the "Benji’s Breakfast" that incorporates that famed corned beef with two eggs to "Randy’s Special," named after the father of owners Chris and Mike Price. Other creative favorites include the Hoppel Poppel (scrambled eggs, browned potatoes and fried salami) and the Super Hoppel Poppel which adds peppers, onions, mushrooms and cheese.

If you’re looking for more traditional breakfast items, they’ve got you covered, too, from the benedicts (offered on weekends only), the griddle items and omelettes – and yes, you can get that corned beef cooked in there, too. It’s a vegetarian-friendly menu, too.

Blue's Egg was really the only competition for Benji’s, as both restaurants reached vote totals well into the four digits.
