Once again, Milwaukee cheap-eats mainstay Conejito's Place nabbed the top spot in the category.
Since 1972, Conejito's has served filling Mexican food to crowds of regulars for $5 or less per plate. And speaking of plates, all of the meals, with the exception of the mole and the ribs, are dished out on paper plates – part of the trademark Conejito's experience and a sign of a dining spot that's providing its food without frills.
The decor features pots filled with dead plants hanging from the ceiling and lots of bunny images from stuffed to painted ("Conejito" means "bunny" in Spanish and was the nickname of the owner, Jose Garza, who passed away in 2010).
Plus, most nights Johnny Cash or the Spanish-language version of "Happy Birthday" will blare from the old jukebox at least once during a visit.
The OnMilwaukee.com editors agree that Conejito's is the best joint in town for cheap eats. And don't forget to wash it all down with a house margarita.
