For the eighth straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com, presented by Locavore, the newest restaurant at Potawatomi Hotel & Casino. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2014."
Milwaukeeans love their local products, and this category saw tremendous growth in total participation over last year, which is maybe why a new winner was crowned: Palermo’s frozen pizza.
Palermo’s pizzas, made at 3301 W. Canal St., ran away and hid with this year’s title for Best Milwaukee Food Product, claiming 29 percent of the total vote – more than doubling that of runner-up Purple Door Ice Cream.
The pizza maker is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014, and features 11 "Primo Thin" ultra thin crust options, seven "Pizzeria" – or hand tossed – pizzas, eight "Classic" pizzas, along with flatbreads and a breakfast pizza.
You can also find them not only in pizzeria at the Canal St. location, but in a variety of grocers in and around Milwaukee.
Usinger’s sausage, last year’s winner, finished a distant third.
As for the editorial staff at OnMilwaukee.com, we did pick Purple Door and its xxx as the best local products.
