Condominiums or steakhouses?

There was a time not too long ago when it was unclear which structures were multiplying faster Downtown. The economy may have taken a downturn recently, but Milwaukeeans love their steak.

And, they love the Five O'Clock Steakhouse.

A perennial favorite among OnMilwaukee.com readers, the restaurant formerly known as Coerper's Five O'Clock Club continued its reign by winning the 2008 award by a comfortable margin over second-place Carnevor and Wauwatosa favorite Eddie Martini's.

The venerable 5 O'Clock, located at 2416 W. State St., has served huge hunks of perfectly seared, lightly crusted and flavorful meat for more than four decades. Neither the ambience nor the décor -- straight out of the '60s -- has changed much.

Customer loyalty hasn't wavered, either.

The Five O'Clock keeps people coming back because the New York Strip and filet mignon are comparable to the best steakhouses in the country. In 2007, Saveur magazine called the restaurant one of its five favorite steakhouses in the country.

Our readers agree.
