Beans & Barley, has been in its current location at 1901 E. North Ave., for more than three decades, but it's no relic of the past. It helped blaze a trail of vegetarian dining options, and continues to be a major East Side draw -- and the favorite of readers.

From its signature burritos -- which include a dairy-free option -- to sandwiches and soups, there are plenty of vegetarian choices. The menu includes full breakfasts, served from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays.

If you've been around for a while, you know the original structure was destroyed by fire in 1993. But the current Beans & Barley building has been around for more than a decade and a half -- long enough to make it an East Side landmark. editors' choice: Cafe Manna
