Just one week shy of the Big Gig ’06, Summerfest officials announced that the world’s largest music festival is teaming up with the world’s oldest active motor speedway, The Milwaukee Mile (which held its first auto race in 1903).

The partnership brings the Milwaukee Mile’s Mobile Mile interactive road show to the south end of the Summerfest grounds for the run of the event, including appearances by the Milwaukee Mile Grid Girls and a chance to sign up for the Miss Milwaukee Mile contest.

In turn, Summerfest will be presenting a pre-Summerfest concert with The Bobby Friss Band during this weekend’s NASCAR event weekend at The Mile. The Bobby Friss Band will also perform at this year’s Big Gig, and Summerfest plans to have a visual presence trackside at The Mile for the duration of the racing season.

On Sunday, July 23, The Milwaukee Mile is hosting the stars of the Indianapolis 500 competing in the ABC Supply / A.J. Foyt 225 IRL IndyCar Series event.  On race morning, the track will host a post-Summerfest “Thank You Concert” featuring The Eddie Butts Band.
Julie Lawrence Special to OnMilwaukee.com

OnMilwaukee.com staff writer Julie Lawrence grew up in Wauwatosa and has lived her whole life in the Milwaukee area.

As any “word nerd” can attest, you never know when inspiration will strike, so from a very early age Julie has rarely been seen sans pen and little notebook. At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee it seemed only natural that she major in journalism. When OnMilwaukee.com offered her an avenue to combine her writing and the city she knows and loves in late 2004, she knew it was meant to be. Around the office, she answers to a plethora of nicknames, including “Lar,” (short for “Larry,” which is short for “Lawrence”) as well as the mysteriously-sourced “Bill Murray.”
