{image1}Fans of PBS weekend cooking shows will recognize Marcel Biró from his program, "The Kitchens of Biro," which reaches more than 75 million U.S. households.
Biró, born in East Germany in 1973, runs Biró Restaurant and Wine Bar in Sheboygan and has a new book out, "Biró -- European-Inspired Cuisine." And he's taking to the road to promote it.
He'll also make some appearances here at home this week. On Friday, May 13 he appears at Larry's Brown Deer Market, at 8737 N. Deerwood Dr., from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. On Monday, May 16, he appears at 7 p.m. at Schwartz Bookshop in Brookfield, 17145 W. Bluemound Rd.
He will sign copies of his book and do a demonstration, preparing one of the many creative and enticing recipes from the book.
Biró enrolled in cooking school as a teenager and by the time he was 21 he was a certified instructor and cooking in acclaimed restaurants. He came to the U.S. in 1999.
"My East German roots left an indelible mark on my career," says Biró. "It was in the challenges of creating unique dishes with limited products and equipment that my creativity was born. It was in working with only the produce we could grow ourselves that I developed an appreciation for seasonal cooking. And it was in experiencing food as a precious commodity that I learned to respect and conserve it, and why today, nearly 16 years after reunification, I still love experimenting with a wealth of exotic ingredients. For me, the ability to work with food is a privilege never to be taken for granted."
