{image1}Apparently, a little shoot of Soho sprouted in Walker's Point recently.
"A gentleman came into our market from Chicago and said it was a lot like antique markets he'd seen in Soho," says Jim Dieter, owner of Blackhawk Antiques Market, 633 S. 12th St.
Blackhawk Antiques is an indoor marketplace that opened on June 4 featuring booths from a variety of antique dealers selling items that run between $6 and $25,000.
"We have a lot of good quality furniture," says Dieter. "Including Knoll, (Charles) Eames, French, traditional and designer furniture."
Art, costume and high-end jewelry, glassware, mirrors, knick-knacks, a player piano and scores of other antiques are available in the Walker's Point space that's more than 100 years old. Most exciting is the range of styles, from museum-quality loveseats to funky '70s chairs.
"My booth is the odd ball," says Scott Genke, whose booth features '60s and '70s pop, space age and mid-century modern furnishings and objects.
Genke, who designed Apollo Cafe, Mantra Lounge and Redroom, also provides custom design and fabriction services for residential and commercial projects.
All of the booths are artistically and sensibly arranged, with dividing walls decorated with crown molding and nice colors of paint.
"The space is very attractive and professional," says Dieter. "Whether you live in a loft or a Wauwatosa home, we have items displayed in a way that you can imagine what it will look like."
Dieter will also launch an on-line shop, offering every item in the store. "It's like E-bay," he says. "We have over 1,000 pages."
The Web site will be advertised all over the country, Dieter says.
Dieter chose the name in tribute to the tanneries that once operated in the area. There was a Blackhawk tannery in the neighborhood, and a faded sign still hangs near his building.
Dieter also restores furniture for the Wisconsin State Capitol Project. "I did restoration for the East and South wings of the state capitol," he says.
