Do you remember getting baseball cards from police officers growing up? The decades-old tradition is back, thanks to the Milwaukee Brewers in collaboration with the Milwaukee Police Department via the Brewers Community Foundation.
On Monday, the Brewers announced that Milwaukee Police officers will now distribute cards with the likes of Christian Yelich, Jackson Chourio and more, with the full roster available as trading cards from MPD.
“Our officers look forward to handing out Brewers baseball cards and interacting with kids in the city,” said Milwaukee Police Department Chief Jeffrey B. Norman via statement, “It’s a great way to be able to reach Milwaukee youth and connect with the kids through baseball.”
“The baseball card program of the past provided youth with a connection to our city and to baseball,” said Rick Schlesinger, Brewers President – Business Operations via statement, “We are pleased to help revive this campaign, support MPD and help create future generations of baseball fans.”
Many will remember receiving baseball cards from officers at parades and festivals. The tradition in Milwaukee dates back to the 80s, when limited sets of cards were given away weekly. For a brief period, Green Bay Packers cards were also given out. When officers weren’t giving out cards from their cars, they were also given out as all-fan giveaways at Milwaukee County Stadium.
While they’ll never be as valuable as a graded Upper Deck or Topps card, they certainly had some gems from time to time:
Be sure to watch for the new cards when they become available this summer.
