The Brewers released their 2010 schedule on Tuesday and prompted the usual questions:

When is Opening Day?

April 5 at Miller Park, when the Brewers play host to the Rockies in a game that begins at 1:10 p.m. After leaving spring training in Arizona, the Brewers will face Detroit in a pair of exhibition games (7:10 p.m. April 2 and 1:10 p.m. April 3).

When do they play the Cubs?

This year, the Brewers host the Cubs in three series. The first will be the second weekend of the season (April 23-25). The Cubs also visit June 8-10 and Sept. 10-12. The Brewers make two trips to Wrigley Field. They'll be the guests for the Cubs' home opener April 12, the opener of a three-game series. And, they'll return for three more Aug. 2-4.

Who are the opponents in interleague play?

The Brewers will play host to Texas (June 11-13), Minnesota (June 22-24) and Seattle (June 25-27). On the road, the interleague slate features a visit to the new outdoor park in Minnesota (May 21-23) and a trek to Anaheim (June 15-17).

Those questions are expected. This year, though, the release of the schedule prompted another query:

Where did the Brewers learn how to do math?

Stay with us here ... According to the press release announcing the schedule, the Brewers will celebrate their 40th anniversary next season which -- if you count the year the franchise was born in Seattle in 1969 -- is actually their 41st year of existence.

Though they were immortalized in Jim Bouton's book, "Ball Four," the Pilots are largely forgotten except for a few footnotes in the franchise record book. If the Brewers want to disown the Pilots, that's their right. (The Mariners don't do anything to commemorate the club, either).

But, there is a bit of inconsistency at play here.

The Brewers celebrated their 20th anniversary season in 1989 -- their 20th season -- and marked their 25th anniversary in 1994. That kept them in line with the Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres and Montreal Expos -- all of whom entered the major leagues during the expansion of 1969.

The Padres and Royals marked their 40th anniversaries this year with ceremonies and uniform patches. The Expos have moved to Washington, where they are struggling to create their own history with a bad club in an indifferent market.

Why are the Brewers choosing to mark their 40th anniversary in their 41st season?

"It's mainly semantics," Tyler Barnes, the team's vice president of communications told OnMilwaukee.com's Andrew Wagner in an e-mail. "I think the teams this year (San Diego and Kansas City) celebrated their 40th seasons, which is accurate. Next year, we plan to celebrate our 40th anniversary, which is also accurate.

"Think of being married -- you reach your second year of marriage before you reach your second anniversary. Make sense? We went through the same thing when I was in Detroit -- if my memory is correct, we celebrated our 100th Anniversary as a Major League team (1901-2001), as opposed to our 100th season, which came a year earlier."

It's confusing, but we'll get used to it. The same can be said for the Brewers' new starting times. The club has pushed the first pitch back five minutes this year. Night games will begin at 7:10 p.m., with Saturday night games at 6:10. Most day games will start at 1:10 p.m.

Here is the full 2010 Brewers schedule. Times and ticket availability will be announced later:
