In what likely will be the first of several off-season deals, the Brewers shipped lefty Doug Davis and minor-leaguers David Krynzel and Dana Eveland to Arizona in exchange for catcher Johnny Estrada and pitchers Claudio Vargas and Greg Aquino.
Estrada, 30, who spent time with Philadelphia and Atlanta before going to the the Diamondbacks last season, will likely be the Brewers' No. 1 catcher next season. Last year, the switch-hitter hit .302 with 11 homers and 71 RBI. Vargas, 28, was 12-10 wiht a 4.92 ERA in 30 starts last season and will likely take a spot in the Brewers' rotation. Aquino, 28, is expected to compete for a job in teh bullpen.
Davis, who was one of the more durable, dependable starters in the rotation during his three-plus seasons in Milwaukee, won at least 11 games in each of the last three seasons. Krynzel, a No. 1 draft pick in 2000, has been surpassed by other outfielder in the organization. Eveland, who turned in some solid outings in 2005, fell out of favor last season because of weight problems and inconsistency.
