The Brewers have reportedly hired Ron Roenicke as the team's 18th manager.

A team official said that the Brewers "have not announced anything and do not have an announcement scheduled at this time," but several media outlets -- including MLB.com -- have confirmed the hire with sources close to the team.

The 54-year-old has spent the last 11 years on manager Mike Scioscia's Angels staff, beginning as a third base coach in 2000 and moving up to bench coach in 2006, replacing Joe Maddon who left to manage the Tampa Bay Rays.

His coaching career began in 1992, when he worked in the Los Angeles Dodgers' minor league system. Roenicke first managed in 1994, with the Rookie League Great Falls Dodgers and moved up to the Class A California League the next year, winning Manager of the Year honors with the San Bernardino Spirit.

In 1996, Roenicke worked as a hitting instructor with Class AAA Albuquerque and returned to managing in 1997 with the Class AA San Antonio Missions, again winning Manager of the Year honors.

He was promoted to manage in Albuquerque late in 1998, after Isotopes manager Glenn Hoffman was named the Dodgers' interim manager. Roenicke managed the Giants' Class AAA affiliate in Fresno in 1999.

Roenicke went 4-0 as interim manager with the Angels last season, while Scioscia was serving a four-game suspension for a brawl between the Angels and Rangers on August 16.

In an eight-year major league playing career (with the Dodgers, Mariners, Padres, Giants, Phillies and Reds), Roenicke hit .238 with 17 home runs and 113 RBI. He was a member of San Diego's 1984 World Series team.
