SAZ'S WEST WING

Steve Sazama, owner of Saz's, made the decision last year to build a 900-sq. ft. addition to his restaurant. He recently renamed it "The State Room" and tells us it's set up to host private parties and business meetings. This is the third expansion in the 26-year history of Saz's State House.

SENDIK'S IN BAY VIEW?

We hear Sendik's is nosing around for a new location in the greater Bay View area. Stay tuned for more. In the meantime, our Bay View staffers are chomping at the bit, praying they'll get a chance to buy fresh produce, flowers and good wine right in their own neighborhood.

MASE

In 1999, bad boy rapper Mase announced that he was retiring from music in order to follow God. Now known as Pastor Mason Betha, "Mase" will lead a free, two-day youth revival at Christian Faith Fellowship, 8605 W. Good Hope Rd. Thurs.-Fri., May 16-17. Call (414) 760-2332.

NORWAY LOVES MAM

The King and Queen of Norway made a stop at the Milwaukee Art Museum this month. The Queen heralded MAM's collection as "one of the best she has seen in the entire United States." MAM continues to impress and in turn, build positive buzz for our hometown.

STILL THE PLACE TO BE

Even with the addition of Eve, Onyx, Pure, Three and other new clubs, there are still plenty of people to go around. But Elsa's continues to pack them in nearly every night. On the second Friday of May, we saw local talking heads Lynise Weeks and David Davis there. Through the years, Elsa's still seems like the place to see and been seen.

A THOUSAND YOUNG MILWAUKEEANS CAN'T BE WRONG

Two of downtown's better events happen in Pere Marquette Park, Wednesday's River Rhythms and August's River Flicks (Friday nights). FOOD NETWORK "SURVIVES" MILWAUKEE

Keith Famie and crew of the Food Network's "Keith Famie's Adventures" were in Milwaukee shooting footage for an episode that will air July 29 at 9:30 p.m. The crew shot scenes of the Milwaukee skyline on Sun., May 5, along with exterior shots of Old World Third Street, Brady Street and Three Brothers. On Mon., May 6 they visited Usinger's, Mader's, The Spice House and Mimma's and had dinner at La Perla.  On Tuesday they enjoyed Solly's Cafe (did you know Solly's uses 150 pounds of butter every week?), Three Brothers and dined at the Milwaukee Chop House. Before heading home on Wednesday they lunched at Nanakusa. Famie was a contestant on the Australian version of "Survivor," in case you didn't know.

TROCADERO BUZZ

The newest Trocadero news is that they are turning the upstairs into a banquet facility. They are in the process of sanding the floors now. Trocadero also will be offering Jazz in the Park picnic baskets for delivery at Cathedral Park. More details next month.

Watch for a wine, piano, art bar called Centanni to open by summer's end at 218 N. Water St., across from new hot spot, Onyx.

Stone Creek Coffee is eyeing a cool Wisconsin Avenue-side shop within the newly renovated Shops of Grand Avenue.

HEY NOW, YOU COULD BE AN ALL-STAR

Major League Baseball, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Greater Milwaukee Convention & Visitors Bureau want you to help make the 2002 John Hancock All-Star FanFest an out-of-the-park success. Making its first appearance in Milwaukee, John Hancock All-Star FanFest will be held at the Midwest Express Center July 5-9. Volunteer opportunities range from host, information guide, skills-game coach and dozens of fun and challenging positions at the world's largest baseball celebration. Qualified volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, enjoy baseball and volunteering, and be available to work at least one five-hour shift for a minimum of three consecutive days. A NEW CHEESE ON THE RIVER

Perched outside The ASQ Center is a funky new public art work. People have told us it's a hunk of cheese. We are not sure what it is, but know that it's a good thing that people are finally talking about public art in the Milwaukee. Check it out.

RUSS IS AN ACHIEVER

Junior Achievement announced that Russell M. Darrow, has been chosen from more than 100,000 volunteers nationwide to win the organization's Gold Leadership Award. Darrow will be honored May 23 at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, as part of a pre-celebration activity for the annual National Business Hall of Fame. Last year, Darrow led the state-wide board of directors as the organization reached a record 114,329 students with its business and economic education programs.

PIER INTO THE FUTURE

Last week the Wisconsin Lake Schooner Education Association unveiled plans for a new Pier Wisconsin education center that will also be the home of the Denis Sullivan lake schooner. The pier, located north of Summerfest but south of the art museum, near the schooner's current home, will be dedicated to community education in fresh water studies, marine science and maritime history. The association plans to break ground on the two-year project in autumn.

Redevelopment Group, LLC (BrewCity) has negotiated an accepted offer with the Pabst Brewing Company for the purchase of the former Pabst Brewing Company complex. There are some deadlines and stipulations, but the developer's vision for the property is summarized in a document under the heading, "Highest and Best Uses of the Real Estate". We thought you'd be interested.

  • Rejuvenate space for residential uses such as lofts, condominiums, apartments and dormitories.
  • Restore space for traditional office uses and for innovative virtual and hotel/office uses.
  • Renovate space for retail uses as licensed, ethnic-inspired brew pubs, restaurants & shops.
  • Refurbish space for traditional hotel rooms and unique brew, bed & breakfast rooms.
  • House the Museum of Beer & Brewing with areas for collectors to display or sell items.
  • Create a jewel for the New Urbanism movement resembling the "Streets of Old Milwaukee."
