The Catholic Church is changing some of the text and translations in the Roman Missal, the book or guide, if you will, used during Mass.

With more than 640,000 registered Catholics in southeastern Wisconsin (I’m one of them), I thought this topic would get a bit of response.

One striking change is the omission of tradition response, "And also with you." NYTimes.com reporter Laurie Goodstein explains it this way: "In the current Mass, when the priest says, 'The Lord be with you,' the congregation responds, 'And also with you.' Come November, the congregation will respond, 'And with your spirit.'"

"And with your spirit?"  Huh?

Change is never easy, and initial reluctance to it is always fast and furious. It's not that I don't like "And with your spirit," but there's a certain quality and tranquility to "And also with you."  I'm sure, though, "And with your spirit," will grow on me and we'll all get used the coming changes.

Fr. James Martin on NPR has a good piece on all of this. Read it here.
