"Spectre" finally hits theaters starting this weekend, and judging from Daniel Craig's press tour, he seems quite fine with this being the last time he ever wears 007's tuxedo.
For instance, take this Time Out London interview, which asked the actor if he could imagine doing another Bond movie. His answer was, um, unenthusiastic.
"Now? I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists. No, not at the moment. Not at all. That’s fine. I’m over it at the moment. We’re done. All I want to do is move on."
And that's been the general theme of the quotes coming out of the press tour, so much so that the "Daniel Craig's last Bond movie" narrative has been attached to "Spectre." I saw the movie last night, and without spoiling anything, it certainly closes out like it could be a final chapter.
The only problem to that Hollywood ending? According to BirthMoviesDeath, he's still got one more on his contract. Perhaps he could do what Marvel does and have a cameo appearance qualify, but as the BirthMoviesDeath article notes, the movie's producers at EON are very unlikely to let him bail quietly from that final movie.
It's easy to chide Craig for being so obviously cranky about playing one of the most iconic, star-making roles available in Hollywood, surrounded by gorgeous landscapes, beautiful women and the swankiest cars.
Then again, that's just what we see of the role. Aside from a few other wannabe blockbusters ("Cowboys and Aliens," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo") it's also taken up all of his time. Reports say "Spectre" – a massive action movie – was a tough shoot, and after all of that, I'm sure he just wants to relax and talk about the movie he just worked hard to make, not one that's not even close to production. It's like somebody asking after finals if you're looking forward to next semester; who wants to talk about that now? Plus, ever since he was picked, reporters and paparazzi have constantly been on his tail, criticizing and just plain constantly badgering him. I can see why he'd want to move on to other, less crazily picked-over things.
Thankfully, his weariness doesn't distractingly make it to the screen in "Spectre." As for the movie itself ... well, Matt Mueller will return in "My Review of Spectre" this weekend.
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
