Brewers left-hander Doug Davis was scratched from a scheduled start this afternoon in Wrigley Field because of back spasms, the team announced less than an hour ago.
Right-hander Geremi Gonzalez, who started his big-league career with the Cubs, will take Davis' place. Davis' back apparently tightened after an outing Saturday night in Kansas City. He has been receiving treatment, but hasn't progressed to the point where he is comfortable pitching.
Gonzalez was held out of competition on Wednesday in case he was needed today. The timing was tough for the Brewers, who dumped a 6-3 decision when their bullpen gave up five runs in the eighth inning. The Brewers had been carrying 13 pitchers for much of the season, but decided recently to go with 12.
