Dobie's Steak House has announced that it will close its doors at 4136 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. in St. Francis following service this week.
The news was shared this afternoon in a Facebook post, which read:
"With heavy hearts, we announce the closure of Dobie’s Restaurant after 64 memorable years. Despite our best efforts, we can no longer continue. We thank our dedicated team and loyal customers. Please join us in our final week to honor Dobie’s legacy."
Since 1954
Dobie's was established by Austin (Dobie) and Alma Doberstein in 1954 when they began serving custard from their kitchen window. Over time, they added a dining room to the back of the house and turned the custard stand into a steakhouse. The rest, as they so often say, is history. This particular history was filled with a great many delicious steaks, relish platters and green olive bejeweled martinis.
The restaurant remained in the Doberstein family until 2022 when Dale and Julie Doberstein recently sold the family business to chef Michael Feker.
Lori is an avid cook whose accrual of condiments and spices is rivaled only by her cookbook collection. Her passion for the culinary industry was birthed while balancing A&W root beer mugs as a teenage carhop, fed by insatiable curiosity and fueled by the people whose stories entwine with each and every dish. She’s had the privilege of chronicling these tales via numerous media, including OnMilwaukee and in her book “Milwaukee Food.” Her work has garnered journalism awards from entities including the Milwaukee Press Club. In 2024, Lori was honored with a "Top 20 Women in Hospitality to Watch" award by the Wisconsin Restaurant Association.
