The Downtown Idol karaoke talent contest takes place tonight, with the first round happening before the 6:30 p.m. kick off of River Rhythms in Pere Marquette Park and the finals after the concert -- 9 p.m. -- at Lucille's Rockin' Pianos. The four finalists who advance from the opening round will be announced during River Rhythms  intermission. The event is free.

I've got to start polishing my repertoire of nasty insults if I'm to be the next Simon Cowell tonight. I'm certainly too tall and too poor a dancer to replace Paula, but I don't have really have a Cowell-esque nature, so I suspect I'll play the role of "good cop" judge. "Bravo for trying, keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars."

But come down tonight and support the local talent and check back here tomorrow and I'll give you the run-down on what transpired, in case you missed. In the meantime, hit it:
