On my all-time list of films, few come close to "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." If it's on TV, I'm watching it. I've got two VHS versions (one taped off TV sometime in the early '90s and another, store-bought version) and two DVDs.
I have annoyed the heck out of friends and significant others in the past with my "talent" of being able to recite the entire film, complete with inflections and music.
It's safe to say, I'm a dork.
Even before I happened to find an airing of the flick early, early on Tuesday morning, it had been in my mind. I saw the news about the new glass "skyboxes" at the Sears Tower, saw Molly Snyder Edler's quote from Cameron Fry in her blog about the building, heard Drew Olson talking about movies you can't turn off during the D-List last week and had just, in general, been thinking it had been a while since I watched the movie.
As I sat on my couch, reciting each and every line, I thought back to my days at Pius High School, when my friend Mike and I would watch the movie and plot our own "day off." We never got there, but I still get giddy at the idea of playing hooky for a day.
But, what would one do? Ferris spent his day galavanting around Downtown Chicago and hijacking the Steuben Day Parade (and I chose to ignore that the parade is held in September, not spring as depicted in the film).
There's no Board of Trade and the U.S. Bank Building, as far as I know, doesn't have a sky deck anymore. There is, of course, the Milwaukee Art Museum, so I could see "priceless works of art."
The baseball game is no problem, thanks to Miller Park, so maybe I could catch a foul ball under the watchful eye of FS Wisconsin's cameras.
I'm not quite sure where I could order pancreas, nor that I'd want to, but with the number of fine dining establishments in Milwaukee, I am sure I could sneak my way in like Ferris & Co. did at "Chez Luis." (Although, who would be the local version of Abe Froman?)
Now my mind is wandering. Luckily, we're at the part where Mr. Rooney walks into the restaurant in his hunt to find Ferris. I've got some time.
