Hollywood channels another classic tale to bring audiences "Red Riding Hood," a re-imagining of the fairy tale opening this weekend.
As fairy tales go, this one is no stranger to edits over time, and in the new movie, Red has been rebooted as an independent young woman more conducive to modern "girl power" themes.
In this version, the legendary red hood is taken up by a village girl named Valerie (played by Amanda Seyfried). Caught up in a love triangle with an arranged suitor and a mysterious woodcutter, Valerie puts her plans for romantic escape on hold in lieu of seeking vengeance against her sister's killer, a werewolf known for terrorizing the village.
What will make or break this movie: Gary Oldman's performance as the famed werewolf hunter brought in to take down the werewolf. This tale could quickly turn into another fantasy teen drama considering the young cast and influences of director Catherine Hardwicke (of "Twilight" fame). With Oldman's inclusion, "Red Riding Hood" seeks to break somewhat from this genre, but its success in doing so lies predominantly with the quality and quantity of Oldman's time on screen.
