Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder begins serving a two-game suspension tonight when the Brewers take on the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.
Fielder had originally been suspended for three games by Major League Baseball for his role in an argument with home plate umpire Wally Bell on Aug. 12 in Houston. Fielder originally appealed the suspension, but did not have a face-to-face meeting with Bob Watson, MLB’s discipline czar.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and MLB.com, an MLB official instead called Fielder in San Francisco and offered the reduction in time served, which Fielder has accepted. He’ll miss the first two games of a three-game set in San Francisco.
There is no word yet on who will take Fielder’s spot in the lineup. Tony Graffanino who has played first on the rare occasion that Fielder sits out is done for the year with a knee injury. Manager Ned Yost could turn to utility man Joe Dillon, who played several positions with AAA Nashville.
